Introduction:
Steam has been the backbone for reliable, energy-efficient sources of heat and power, with versatile applications across industries, making it indispensable. Accurate level measurement in steam boilers is crucial for plant operators to ensure safe and efficient operation in process industries.
The multiport bicolor level gauge is designed to withstand high temperatures and pressure in boiler steam drums. It provides a reliable solution for clear and distinct indication of water level in green color and steam in red color.
Design Features:
- Robust Multiport Construction: The multiport design ensures reliable performance under high pressure & temperature conditions, ensuring durability and safety in harsh boiler environments.
- Customized CC Distance: Available in CC distances from 500 to 1800 mm with visibility through 5 to 21 ports to suit the requirement.
- Enhanced Visibility: Its unique design with a lens for each port improves clear, bright & unmistakable indication of water level in green color and steam in red. It enables the operator to easily view the image without standing at a precise spot.
- Ease of Maintenance: The design includes easy-access ports, allowing for simple cleaning and replacement of parts without the need to dismantle the entire gauge.
- High-Quality Mica Sheet Protection: To ensure the gauge’s longevity and reliability, the inner surface of the gauge glass is protected against the erosive effects of steam with a high-quality mica sheet. The mica sheet significantly extends the gauge’s life, maintaining its clarity and accuracy in high-pressure environments.
- Robust Sealing System: High-grade sealing gaskets provide consistent gasket loading, ensuring a tight and secure seal even under varying thermal and pressure cycles. This feature is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the gauge in demanding applications, preventing leaks, and ensuring reliable performance over time.
- Expansion Loop: These loops are designed to absorb the thermal expansion that occurs as temperatures rise, thereby reducing stress on the gauge and its components. This feature enhances the durability of the gauge and ensures accurate readings even under extreme conditions.
- Illuminators with Low-powered, High-intensity LED Bulbs are energy-efficient, produce minimal heat, and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting options.
- Viewing Hood for Clear Daytime Visibility: It helps to reduce glare and reflections, ensuring that the bicolor indication remains clear and easy to read, even in bright ambient light conditions. This feature is particularly useful in outdoor installations or in environments with variable lighting, where clear visibility is essential for safe and efficient operation.
- Approvals & Certification: The Multiport Bicolor Glass Level Gauge is certified with Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR) approval. The level gauges adhere to established standards for the design, construction, inspection, and testing of instruments made from IBR-compliant materials. They are manufactured under stringent quality control protocols as specified by IBR authorities.
Level gauges also comply American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) design standard. IBR approval attests to the gauge’s compliance with rigorous safety and quality standards, making it suitable for use in various industries. Whether installed in power plants, refineries, or other critical facilities, the certified gauges provide peace of mind, knowing they meet the highest industry standards.
Construction:
It consists of a trapezoid-shaped liquid chamber in metallic construction with equispaced ports in front and rear of a non-parallel vertical plane. Circular gauge glass with an inner mica sheet is fitted on each port with sealing/cushion gaskets and a cover plate. The liquid chamber is fitted between two end blocks with an isolation valve through an expansion loop. A tie bar is provided for better circulation of condensate and robustness of gauge assembly.
An illuminator comprising a bicolor red & green light source along with a lens, housed in a steel enclosure with louvres is fitted on the rear side of the gauge. A viewing hood is fitted on the front side of the gauge for clear visibility. It is provided with two drain valves for extra safety.
Operation:

It is based on the refraction of light through water and steam due to differences in refractive index. The red and green colored light rays from the light source pass the lens and fall on inclined gauge glass fitted on a trapezoid-shaped chamber. These light rays get refracted in steam or water according to their refractive index. It appears to the viewer as red color, when light passes through steam and green color, when light passes through water.
Applications: All types of medium and high-pressure boilers.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the Multiport Bicolor Glass Level Gauge is a critical instrument for any facility operating high-pressure boilers. Its combination of durability, accuracy, and safety makes it a preferred choice for engineers and operators who require reliable water level indication. As the demand for efficient and safe boiler operation continues to grow, the role of advanced level gauges like the Multiport Bicolor Glass Level Gauge will only become more significant.
